Walking and Talking (1996)

Sam: ****

  • A pretty good ’90s-style date movie.

Le Petit Lieutenant (2006)

Emma: ****

  • Deceptive: you think the film is about one character, then it switches gears and becomes about someone else. Existential.

Manufacturing Dissent (2007)

Sam: ***

  • An unknown documentary filmmaker gives Michael Moore the Roger & Me treatment — following him around trying to get an interview, & failing. Meanwhile she becomes increasingly disenchanted with her subject. Apparently, Roger (Smith) actually did allow Moore to interview him, on film (for ten or fifteen minutes). And Moore edited R&M so that it seemed his mic was cut off at a GM shareholders’ meeting, but it wasn’t. Etc. But even one of his critics says in the movie that (Moore is subtly deceptive but) Moore doesn’t let many overtly erroneous statements into his movies. So his movies should be viewed as editorials that are mostly factually accurate. Supposedly people either love MM or hate him, but that’s about what I thought before seeing this.

  • The director, Debbie Melnyk, claimed to be fan of Moore’s who became disappointed with him but it seemed she was out to get him from the beginning. Maybe Moore figured this out and that’s why he decided not the let her interview him. A lot of Melnyk’s criticisms seemed petty; like Moore owes her something.

Black Book (”Zwartboek”) (2006)

Sam: ***

  • A WW2 movie in Dutch by Paul Verhoeven. Not moronic nor as sleazy as some of Verhoeven’s other movies, Starship Troopers, Showgirls, etc. Fast-paced, unlike some other WW2 movies, such as the almost psychedelically lethargic End of the Affair. Good job by lead actress Carice van Houten.

Emma: ****

  • Good story, some of it based on fact. Lots of plot twists.

Amazing Grace (2007)

Sam: **

  • The life of British abolitionist William Wilberforce is good material for a movie; wasted here.

The Wire

Fascinating New Yorker profile of David Simon, creator of The Wire, best TV drama ever: “Stealing Life.”

Blame It on Fidel (2006)

Sam: ****

  • A pre-teen French girl in early-’70s Paris adjusts to her parents becoming left-wing activists. Good cinematography, and great acting from child actress Nina Kervel-Bey. Good job directing from Julie Gavras, daughter of French filmmaker Costa-Gavras.

Emma: ****

  • Good acting all around. Good depiction of life from a child’s perspective.

Absolutely Fabulous: White Box (2004)

Sam: ***

  • This popular British comedy series began in 1992, but still had a few laughs left 12 years later.

Emma: ***

  • Somewhat funny but too much of a re-hash of old skits.

Lions for Lambs (2007)

Sam: **

  • Bad (antiwar, anti-Republican) propaganda.

Emma: ***

  • Meryl Streep’s acting was impressive but watching this movie was like being preached at.
